Although LASIK is currently the most popular vision correction procedure, it is certainly not the only one, and it may not be the best for you. Woodhams Eye Clinic offers a number of procedures, including some for which Woodhams is/was an FDA clinical trial site. Woodhams Eye Clinic has been on the leading edge of vision surgery since the early '80s.

Since Dr. Woodhams began performing vision surgery in 1983, Radial Keratotomy (RK) became the standard, but was replaced by Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) and by LASIK, as well as the newer, more precise IntraLASIK™.  IntraLASIK™, along with several newer procedures, such as Implantable Contact Lens (ICL), are options for vision correction. Dr. Woodhams, experienced in the entire range of procedures, can help select the one that is proper for your particular vision problem.

Below are brief descriptions of each of the laser vision correction procedures, as well as other vision correction procedures offered by Woodhams Eye Clinic.

ABOUT LASER VISION CORRECTION
  • LASIK and Intralasik – Still one of the most popular procedure because it is more precise and problem-free than the procedures it replaced. For a detailed explanation of LASIK, click here.
  • IntraLASIK™- ) With IntraLASIK™ the highly-precise femtosecond laser "evaporates" a thin plane of cornea exactly parallel to the surface with a microscopic accuracy of 10 microns of the intended depth each and every time! This tolerance is 400-500% better than conventional metal blade-based keratectomy. The ability to predetermine the flap diameter, thickness, and depth allows Dr. Woodhams to "customize" the ideal, minimally invasive corneal flap for each patient. This spares as much as possible of the underlying cornea which contributes to long-term corneal stability.
  • PRK - Photorefractive Keratectomy - similar to LASIK in the reshaping of the cornea, but uses a different procedure for preparing the cornea for reshaping. Although PRK is an older procedure than LASIK and has largely been replaced by it, PRK is still useful for patients with larger pupils and thin corneas.
  • LASEK - Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis - is used mostly for people with thin or flat corneas who are poor candidates for LASIK, because LASIK requires the removal of more tissue for success. It is a relatively new procedure, and has somewhat more discomfort afterward and a slightly longer healing time than LASIK
ABOUT IMPLANTABLE COLLAMER LENSES (ICL)

These lenses are a revolutionary new treatment for patients who are 21 to 45 and are not candidates for Lasik due to high myopia or thin or weak corneas.  The lenses are placed just below the iris in a simple, 10 minute, painless procedure and are not detectable to the patient and are invisible to others.  The lenses are removable and reversible and can eliminate the need for glasses or contacts in patients who are -3 to -16 diopters. ABOUT MULTI-FOCAL LENS IMPLANTS

One of the latest developments in the treatment of refractive disorders is the use of Multi-Focal Lens Implants also called WOODHAMS PRELEX which is for patients over 55 years old with or without cataracts.  Dr. Woodhams was among the first surgeons in the United States to utilize Lens Implants in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Multi-focal lens implants are especially effective in allowing patients who wear bifocal prescription glasses to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.  These lenses will also eliminate or prevent the development of cataracts.

ABOUT CATARACTS

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, reducing the sharpness of the image on the retina, making them look fuzzy. Cataracts are the leading cause of visual loss for people 55 or older, but eye injuries and certain diseases, such as diabetes and alcoholism also can cause cataracts.

Treatment for a cataract consists of replacing the clouded lens with a sterile plastic or silicone one. Cataract surgery is a fast, safe, and painless procedure that is done with such precision and with such tiny incisions, that no stitches are required and recovery time is minimal.

Dr. Woodhams has been performing cataract surgery at Woodhams Eye Clinic since 1983.  He was the first surgeon in Georgia to perform the newer multi-focal or accommodating PRELEX lens exchange.  Since 2004, Dr. Woodhams has helped hundreds of patients become free of bifocals and reading glasses.  One was even a staff member.  Ask to speak with Jan when you call for information.
